AKUREYRI CAPITAL OF THE NORTH
Akureyri is called the capital of the north, in the north-east of Iceland, about 60 km south of the Arctic Circle, but enjoys some of the nicest weather in the country. It is the largest community outside of the Reykjavik area with a population of about 15.000 inhabitants. It is picturesquely situated in the slopes at the end of a long fjord, Eyjafjörður, sheltered by mountains. Akureyri is located in a fertile agricultural area and has varied food production. The town also has a flourishing fishing industry. It has for a long time been the centre of trade, services and transportation in northern Iceland. Akureyri is the centre for education in the north, benefitting from a number of schools and a rich and growing cultural life. Akureyri and the surrounding district is one of the most popular vacation spots in Iceland.
