KALDALON
Kaldalon is a 5 km long bay branching to the north from the large Ísafjarðardjúp bay. One of the few glacier tongues of the only glacier of the Northwest, Drangajökull, flows down into the short valley at its end. The Mórilla river is its discharge and gradually delivers silt deposits, which are filling it up. During the 18th century, the glacier tongue advanced far enough to bury the farm Lónhóll. According to written sources, another farm called Trimbilstaðir stood there in the past, but there are no traces of it left. The road crosses the Mórilla river and ends at the abandoned farm Tyrðilmýri. Actually the entire length of the northern shoreline of the Ísafjarðardjúp bay is deserted, all the farms there have been abandoned. One of the most beloved composers of the country, Sigvaldi Kaldalóns, who also was a doctor of medicine, lived in Kaldalón for a time. He took up the name Kaldalón, because the natural beauty of the place spellbound him. (Text: www.nat.is)
